Saguaro Lake is located 40 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. It’s even closer to Scottsdale and Mesa. It’s about a 35 to 40 minute drive from Gold Canyon. Either way, it’s surprising to find a decent sized desert lake so close to a major metropolitan area. You need a special pass for using the lake, but the National Parks “America the Beautiful” Pass will allow you to park at the various picnic spots scattered around the lake.

I went there for a morning shoot in November of last year. I decided to photograph the sunrise from the west side of the lake. This meant finding some parking at the Saguaro Lake Marina. I later briefly explored Peregrine Point:

The lake is scenic at sunsets and sunrises and possibly at other times, although it’s crowded during the day and you would need good light to make it scenic during the day. Here’s a few images from Butcher Jones Recreation Site and Peregrine Point:
